Drum Lessons

About Rob Schwartz

The goal of Rob’s lessons is to teach students to play music on the drum set, so he has students begin playing along with music as soon as possible. Instruction focuses on three general areas: (1) hand and pedal technique, (2) counting and reading rhythms, and (3) playing the drum set cleanly and in time. Rob is always open to student input about the direction lessons take.

Rob has a degree in Jazz Studies from Oberlin Conservatory of Music where he was a student of renowned jazz drummer Billy Hart. He also studied Brazilian drumming with Jorge Alabê while playing for Jorge’s bateria, Samba Rio. Over the years, Rob has worked throughout the US and China in jazz and rock bands such as San Francisco’s Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, Amos Payne, the Attachments, Otto Mobile and the Moaners, and the jazz trio Beep.

Rob is well-versed in many styles including rock, pop, jazz, samba, Afro-Cuban and reggae. He has 12 years of experience with students ranging from young children to adults. Rob loves teaching all that he’s learned and seeing his students grow as musicians.
