Performance-based drum lessons for all ages and skill levels–your first lesson is FREE!

Ready to become the heartbeat of the band? Our Philadelphia drum teachers specialize in rock, pop, and modern styles that get students excited to play. At Rawk U School of Music, we understand that drums are born out of tradition–from swing to jazz to blues to rock, the drum set itself is only about 100 years old and perfectly suited for the music students want to learn. Our experienced drum instructors in Philadelphia focus on the drummer’s most important job: keeping consistent tempo while building the coordination and creativity that makes drumming so exciting. Whether you’re 5 or 50, we’ll help you develop the rhythm, confidence, and stage presence that comes from truly mastering the drums.

What Sets Our Philadelphia Drum Lessons Apart

“A drummer’s number one job is consistency of tempo. When we see a band play, we watch them work in sync–that’s the drummer’s responsibility. Once you master that foundation, you get to be the driving force that makes people move.”

Bass Lessons with Rawk U

Drums and bass are musical cousins, both providing the rhythmic foundation. Many drummers find bass intuitive since both focus on groove and timing.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Drum Lessons

We typically recommend age 5 and up, mainly due to the physical size requirements of a full drum kit. However, we evaluate each child individually during a free trial lesson. We’ve had amazing 4-year-old students who were natural talents!

Not immediately. We have professional drum sets here for lessons. At minimum, you’ll need drumsticks and can practice on pillows at home. While having a kit helps progress, we’ll work with your situation and can suggest affordable options like Facebook Marketplace finds.

Both work fine for learning fundamentals. Electric drums are great for volume control and space constraints. Acoustic drums offer more nuanced sound response, but for the first 2-3 years of learning, either option allows you to develop proper coordination and timing.

An average student practicing regularly can play a simplified version of a song within 2 months. If you come to 8 lessons and generally practice, completing about 80% of your assignments, you’ll be playing recognizable songs.

Touch your instrument daily, even if just for a minute. Focus on meeting weekly goals rather than strict time requirements. If you need structure, 25 minutes daily works well, but consistency matters more than duration.

While we encourage students to watch videos for additional learning, your Philadelphia drum instructor provides personalized answers to your specific questions and guidance based on your individual strengths and weaknesses. We provide personalized instruction that adapts to how YOU learn best.
